IV. SPECIALIZED
FIELDS IN MINISTRY
The Institute has prepared special workshops that deal with
Hispanic presence in the United States for Lutheran districts,
circuits and congregations that are interested in beginning or
continuing ministries with Hispanics. The nature of each workshop
is adjusted to meet the needs of each organization and its particular
context.
|
| Objectives |
-
To prepare
individuals for specialized areas of Hispanic ministry by
means of a program for continuous professional education.
-
To
inform and provide assistance to membership, districts
and different ecclesiastical entities in areas of evangelism,
pastoral ministry and lay leadership preparation for
Hispanic ministry.
- To support
ministries that want to begin new Hispanic ministry or continue
existing work.
|
| Methodology |
Institute professors
or qualified men and women with broad experience in Hispanic
work impart courses of one, two or three day duration in areas
of the country where the inviting group desires such intense
instruction. These "Workshops in Hispanic Initiatives" presuppose
a high level of interest on the part of the hosting organization.
A minimum of an 8 hour course has been established precisely to
discourage an attitude of easy or fast solutions to Hispanic ministry. |
| Costs |
The cost of each workshop will vary depending on its length,
number of participants, travel and material requirements necessary
to properly carry it out. |

| Summer School |
The Institute sponsors its own one or two week residential Summer
School which is carried out on the campus of Christ Our Savior
Lutheran Church in San Antonio, Texas. The focus of this
program is to provide one or two Seminary Level courses to help
existing students accelerate their program by one semester. Because
the courses are advanced Seminary courses pastors and deaconesses
already active in ministry are invited to see these offerings as
opportunities for continuing education.
Summer School courses have the same fees as other Seminary Level
courses. Nevertheless, scholarship assistance is adjusted to provide
maximum participation by students and professional church workers. |
| The Hispanic Summer Program |
Because Concordia Seminary is one of the 35 sponsoring seminaries
of the Hispanic Summer Program of the Association of
Hispanic Theological Educators (AETH), Institute students are eligible
to receive scholarship assistance to receive two weeks of summer
instruction with Hispanic theologians and students each summer.
Interested students should communicate with AETH by contacting
its web page:

| Academic Credit Toward An Associate in Arts (A.A.) |
The Institute's program by extension was considered experimental
by the educational institutions of the Missouri Synod when the
concept of theological education by extension was begun
in 1987. Because of this reality at that time it did not seek academic
recognition for its courses. Since that time, however, the Institute
has negotiated an agreement with Concordia University of Mequon,
Wisconsin, whereby certain courses may be received by that university
toward an Associate in Arts degree. Students desiring this recognition
should make application to Concordia University and will be charged
academic fees established by that institution. Interested students
should contact Office of Admissions of Concordia University
of Wisconsin, 12800 North Lake Shore Drive, Mequon, WI 53097. |
| Relationship with The Deaconess Program of Concordia Seminary |
In 2002 Concordia Seminary began a new program to train deaconesses
in its Master of Arts program. It has also modified this program
so as to certify Hispanic women for diaconal ministries in collaboration
with the Hispanic Institute. The program consists of eight courses
and an internship program under the Seminary's Deaconess Program
in addition to the Institute's Entrance Level Program. The deaconess
student may take up to four courses per year imparted over six
weekends. These weekends are generally programmed to coincide with
the Institute's Seminary Level program on campus presence.
Women may obtain more information by contacting: Director
of Deaconess Programs, Concordia Seminary, 801 DeMun Avenue,
St. Louis, MO 63105 or call Deaconess Theresa List at 314
505 7147. |
| Relationship with Concordia University, River Forest, Illinois |
Institute professors, course authors and technicians are grateful
for the professional technical services which the staff of the
television studios of Concordia University have provided for the
Institute since 1987. The Institute continues to use this institution
as its primary source of media and technical support. |
